Journey Wins GameCity Award!
“Journey was a unanimous choice for the GameCity Prize 2012, many of the jurors were un-experienced in playing videogames and it confounded their expectations of what videogames were. Of all the shortlisted titles, Journey presents the player with an especially coherent vision, simultaneously fantastic and familiar.
“All of the Jury commented on the art direction in particular, the extraordinary sense of size and scale it portrayed. Whilst it was a short game, it was in no way small. It’s a focused, detailed piece of work – challenging you to measure it in terms other than just the length of gameplay. One of the jury commented that it was like a favourite place, a walk in the country, that she would love to go back and revisit. In particular, Journey was a videogame that had been created by artists immersed in a broad culture. Both obviously a game, but challenging of what a game could be – it displayed an extraordinary level of care and attention."
-Lord Puttnam, filmmaker and chair for the GameCity Prize 2012 panel
Whoa..... I'm honored...! Its quite incredible, considering the caliber of the other nominated games, all of which are extremely deserving of praise: Catherine, Fez, Johann Sebastian Joust, Mass Effect 3, Proteus and Super Mario 3D Land. Wow.

THE ART OF JOURNEY Book is announced!
The book that I have been designing and writing over the past couple months, The Art of Journey, was announced today on the playstation blog! I'm super excited about this book because it is full of art that I made during the development of Journey that has never been seen. Its also has a great section of fan art, with some wonderful Journey - inspired work. The book is going to be printed at very high quality thanks to Blue Canvas, the studio that is publishing it. It's also got a really cool augmented-reality feature where you can point your smartphone or tablet at it and actually see animated 3D models that I made for the game. It will be available in September!
Here is a video about the book! Its includes interviews with me, Jenova Chen, and Austin Wintory. They made us sound smart! Cool! You can even see me wearing my favorite green "Journey shades" out in the Pismo dunes if you are paying attention...!
"[The book] allows readers to scan tablets or smartphones to unlock animated 3D augmented reality models straight from the game, which sounds sort of clever and awesome. Looks incredible.
...the book will most likely also be a must buy."
There's a brief article about it on Kotaku Australia in which they say this:
"[The book] allows readers to scan tablets or smartphones to unlock animated 3D augmented reality models straight from the game, which sounds sort of clever and awesome. Looks incredible.
...the book will most likely also be a must buy."
I can't wait till everyone can see the book for themselves. Its very exciting!!!

My Colors! 3D Journey Painting is on Kotaku
Colors! 3D is a neat program that just came out for the 3DS. I had the opportunity to play around with it a week or so before it came out, and did this image. Pretty cool that Kotaku picked it up! The neat thing is that when you see it on the 3DS, its....3D. You can watch a timelapse of me painting it here on the Colors! 3D website.

JOURNEY COMES OUT MARCH 13
The release date for Journey, the game I have been working on for three years with ThatGameCompany, has finally been announced. March 13th!!!! Read the official announcement on the PlayStation Blog.
The press has been playing a review build, and there's already a lot of good buzz. Check out this glowing review at Games Radar.
Working as the art director on this game has been a real-life journey for me, and I have learned a lot along the way. I really can't wait for everyone to finally be able to play the game! I hope I will be able to show more of the behind the scenes artwork for the game sometime soon.
In other news, the previous ThatGameCompany game that I worked on, Flower, is being featured in an upcoming show at the Smithsonian Museum. Read this article about it on the Huffington Post. Its quite an honor that Flower is one of the few games selected for the show. Its also pretty cool that the curator talks a lot about it in the video!
